Comments? drrobert@idahovet.com The Vision: Sandpoint, Idaho is a unique community in the northern reaches of the intermountain western United States. Outdoor recreational activities abound during the warmer months; however, winter-time recreation is sparse. This is especially true for our area's youth after school and on cold rainy days. The high cost of skiing precludes many local residents from utilizing our ski resort. The inclement weather also reduces the available activities for adults, especially seniors and retirees. Ice and snow, in addition to rain and mud, can combine to keep many of these individuals house-bound. Membership to local athletic clubs is financially available to only a small percentage of these residents. Today there is an increased awareness that exercise is an important ingredient for individuals of all ages. There are also difficulties and threats which did not exist to previous generations. This includes a tremendous number of single-parents raising families, an even larger number of families in which both parents must work, several cheap and highly available drugs such as methamphetamine, and diseases such as AIDS. For these reasons, we believe that our community will greatly benefit from a multi-use Recreation Center that focuses on providing activities for the largest possible number of local residents. This Recreation Center will contain the following: 1) An indoor swimming pool and water park; 2) Dividable meeting rooms for community events and programs; 3) An indoor ice skating arena; and 4) An indoor walking track. The selection of these 4 venues for the Recreation Center was finalized after prolonged discussions with community members over 5 years. In addition, Project Yo-Yo (2003) surveys indicated the desire of Bonner County youth for this type of combination facility. Surprisingly, this recent survey matched a more general –though quite old – survey of Bonner County residents (1971) where it was indicated that swimming, ice skating, and roller skating were the top three choices. |
